Facebook Top News vs. Most Recent

We hear two questions a lot:

  1. Where do the Facebook users spend most time, in Top News or Most Recent?
  2. What algorithm decides what to put in Top News or Most Recent?

We don’t have the complete answer but here is what we know:

IngBoo sends over 300,000 updates to Facebook every day. Many of these end up in the Most Recent stream.

Over 170,000 users look at these updates!

The click-back rate is over 3%.

This tells us a few things: First, Facebook users spend a lot of time in the Most Recent feed. Secondly, good, relevant content is rewarded with user attention. Some of our updates “graduate” to the Top News feed. We can only suspect why. Only Facebook knows. We also suspect that the algorithm is a work in progress. What we know is that user do NOT like uncertainty. This is why I most often go to the Most Recent feed and it seems I am not alone in doing so.

There has been talk about gaming the algorithm. Question is if it is needed? The best results are always based on users being able to connect with great content and getting relevant updates. IngBoo does a pretty good job here!

The Emergence of F-Commerce

There is seemingly no limits to what you can do with a Facebook Fan Page. As illustrated in an article at Investors.com, J.C. Penney has launched a full online retail store within Facebook. If you combine e-commerce with the fan page concept you get a powerful solution for “social commerce”. The users are connected as fans. Postings on the fan page propagate to the user’s news feed. Deals can easily be shared with friends inside Facebook. The missing component is the personalization of the relationship between the retailer and the user. The current platform doesn’t allow me (i.e., the user) to individualize my update stream, which increased the risk of information fatigue. It is a huge issue. If the online retailer could communicate one-on-one via the news feed, user attention increases together with deal flow. Fortunately, IngBoo has the solution to the issue. With us, the retailer can provide individualized updates on the deals and offers I am interested in, straight into my Facebook news feed!

Practice what You Preach!

The IngBoo blog is now officially on WordPress. One would think that we were there already, given how much we like WordPress and the tools we provide to the WordPress community (e.g., Facebook Like for Tags). But, that wasn’t the case. When we started our blog, we defaulted to Blogger. There were no scientific reasons for this. When we decided on what platforms to target with our new publishing tools though, WordPress came up on top. That is how it came about that we have a WordPress plugin and a Blogger blog. Obviously, we want to practice what we preach so now we have moved. This also gives us opportunities to test out new cool plugin features in a production environment. Therefore, beware of what you click on!

Facebook Like for Tags – 10,000 Downloads!

Our insanely popular WordPress plugin, Like for Tags, today surpassed 10,000 downloads. We think that is pretty cool. We were excited when we passed 1,000 downloads too… and when we passed 2,000. After that we decided to hold off on celebrations until we reached the 10K milestone.
Like for Tags allows the web site to communicate with the users based on what they have liked before. This drastically increases relevance in the updates that the user receives in the Facebook News Feed. User and web site both benefit. The user gets the stuff he/she is interested in and the web site gets more revisits.

The WordPress plugin can be downloaded here. You can also install it from within your WordPress Admin dashboard by selecting “plugins” and “add new”.
