The Browser Reinvented – The Social Browser

Who would have thought that the browser would (again) become a hot commodity in Silicon Valley? On the mobile side, SkyFire  is doing great. The new version 2.0 for Android really rocks. It is faster, better and slicker than anything out there. It works great even in 2G conditions so it will have to be my new default browser.

Rockmelt is another very interesting company. While still in beta, it looks really promising. Who would be better than Mark Andreessen to back a browser startup?

Common for both browsers is the integration of social media. Through these browsers, it is now easier than ever to share, comment, bookmark and keep track of your friends in Facebook and Twitter.

Social networking is indeed becoming as ubiquitous as email and search. The integration of social media into browsers is just the most recent evidence of that. What makes this possible is the commitment to open standards such as Open Graph and OAuth. Social networking is also experiencing consolidation. When developing solutions for social media, this is very helpful as it simplifies implementation and user experience. It is a double-edged sword though. On one hand, it makes sharing easier for the user. On the other hand, lack of competition is not good.

What is Your Like Button Worth?

This question is being voiced more and more. The true answer is, that it depends. There are some interesting statistics regarding the Like button though. Mashable recently wrote about this. Here are a few observations:

  • Not all people click on Like buttons but those who do, have on average twice as many friends on Facebook as other users.
  • People who click on Like buttons apparently click on other things too. They are five times more likely to click on links in their Facebook News Feed than other users.

Now, here is something news media should pay attention to: The average age of a person who clicks on the Like button is 34. That is a lot younger than the news-reading audience in general. This should be viewed as an opportunity to grab the next generation of readers.

Bloggers and online media is getting on the bandwagon. Clearly, integrating the social graph with your web site is paying off with more time spent on the site and more page views. Both the web site and Facebook wins. With IngBoo, the Like button is expanded to an ongoing engagement model based on what the user has Liked before. The connection is ongoing, relevant and targeted. This is truly the next generation of personalized subscriptions.

The Facebook Outage

This message is for publishers who use our WordPress plugin – Like for Tags:

As I am sure most of you know, Facebook had several outages last week, one lasting for several hours. Those of you who use Facebook Like for Tags, our WordPress plugin, were therefore impacted as well.

The reason is very simple: Facebook Like for Tags is a true Facebook button, albeit powered by the IngBoo change-detect-notification system.

We have since tested the function and it has been operational for several days.

If you deactivated/disabled the plugin as a result of this outage, you can now safely activate it again.

IMPORTANT – If you are using plugin version 1.2 (or earlier), you will need to remember your email address and password since deactivation resets earlier settings. If you can’t remember your password, you can have one sent by visiting http://www.ingboo.com/pc , select “login” and ask to have the password sent to you. If you need additional help, please contact support@ingboo.com.

Facebook Like for Tags Passes 1,000 Downloads

Like for Tags expands the basic Facebook Like function to dynamically generated content. Instead of a one-time sharing event, it becomes a permanent connection for ongoing updates and sharing, based on your post tags or categories.

For example, a web site writes about consumer technology. A reader decides to Like (i.e., clicks on the Facebook Like button) an article about the new Apple iPad. Next time the web site posts another article about Apple, that user will automatically get an update in the Facebook News Feed. IngBoo transforms the basic Facebook Like into your trusted recommendations engine!

We recently released a plugin for WordPress that implements Like for Tags. This morning we released version 1.3, which primarily deals with plugin configuration. We passed 1,000 downloads today.

Some other blogs have covered this as well. DragonBlogger, WPHacks and Ayuda WordPress (Spanish) have great articles on Like for Tags.

If you have a WordPress web site, you can download the plugin here!
